Fennel has a lovely gentle flavour as well as calming properties on your little one’s tummy. It’s also packed full of fibre, potassium, folate and antioxidants. Fibre aids digestion and potassium is needed to maintain a good balance in body fluids and make sure all the nerves and muscles are staying strong and healthy. Folate works together with Vitamin B12 to help make red blood cells and makes sure our nervous system is working as it should be and antioxidants help protect cells from damage by free radicals.

When to give to your baby

Fennel makes a yummy and healthy choice for one of your baby’s first vegetables. We recommend to start weaning at around 6 months, however every baby is different so follow your instinct or consult your health visitor if you are not sure.

Cooking fennel at home

The perfect fennel

We always use organic fennel, which means that it has not been sprayed or treated with any nasties. The fennel should be bright white with a slight green tinge and firm to touch. Where ever possible buy the fennel with some of the green herb attached as this is a really good way to tell how fresh it is!

Best way to cook them for your baby

It is great steamed or roasted and can be added at any stage of your little ones journey taking care to puree it carefully as it can sometimes be fibrous. It is wonderful in stews, or rice dishes and really is a good one to widen your little ones palate.

What goes well with fennel

Broccoli, parsnip, peas, lentils, onion, brown rice, tomato.
