Brown rice

Nutrients
Brown rice is packed with manganese which helps with bone formation, keeping energy levels up and protecting cells from free radical damage. It’s also a good source of fibre and phosphorus. Fibre aids digestion and phosphorus is important for healthy cells and bones and keeping energy levels stable.

When to give to your baby

Brown Rice makes a good choice for one of your Baby’s first grains. We recommend to start weaning at around 6 months, however every baby is different so follow your instinct or consult your health visitor if you are not sure.

The perfect brown rice
Wherever possible we like to use organic brown rice , which means that they have not been sprayed or treated with any nasties. We understand that this isn't always possible, so buy the best available to you at the time. Brown Rice can be stored in a cool dry place for several months. In case your home temperature is quite high you can always store brown rice in the fridge.

How to cook

Brown Rice takes twice as long to cook then white rice but its nutritional benefits compensate for the effort. The easiest way to cook brown rice for your baby is to soak it overnight; you can even use the water you soaked it in to cook with so you don’t loose any of the precious nutrients! If you havent planned that far in advance, don’t worry as you can just as easily cook it without soaking first, by adding 2.5 the volume of water to rice and simmer on a low heat until tender (around 30-35 minutes but will vary from packet to packet, so best to follow instructions if you’re not sure!) Used as a baby rice, you can add your breast milk as a perfect weaning porridge; why not add a bit of cinnamon to introduce a new flavour! For later stages, try adding cooked brown rice to vegetable purees or sauces before blending to the appropriate consistency to add body and texture.
