Tomatoes are a good source of Vitamin C and lycopene. Vitamin C helps to heal wounds, keep the immune system healthy, and is needed for normal growth and development and for helping the body to absorb iron. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cells from damage by free radicals.
When to give to your baby
Tomatoes make a good choice to introduce to your little ones palate once they start getting the hang of eating, and you are moving onto a more varied palate. We recommend to introduce your little one to tomatoes from around +7 months, however every baby is different so follow your instinct or consult your health visitor if you are not sure. To start off with, tomatoes are best given to your baby cooked as cooking the tomato reduces its acidity and thus is more gentle to the little ones’ tummy. Try adding a small amount to a dish to add flavour, increasing the amount you add as your little ones gets used to the flavour. If you find your little ones skin has a reaction to the acidity of tomato, have a chat with your health visitor or Doctor for their advice. There’s no rush and it’s better to take your time with foods and try introducing again at a later stage if they don’t go down well at first.

The perfect tomato
We always use fresh organic tomatoes, which means that they have not been sprayed or treated with any nasties. When choosing tomatoes look for firm fresh looking ones that are unbruised. Wherever possible choose tomatoes that are still on their vines; these are the first parts of the plant to deteriorate and their presence and vivacity suggests the tomatoes are truly fresh. Store your tomatoes, ripe or unripe, at room temperature and not in the fridge for a fuller flavour, and where possible try to buy in season.
Best way to cook them for your baby
Tomatoes are really easy to cook. Try them roasted or cook in a splash of olive oil until tender. They blend well with most vegetables nicely, or you can always make a simple tomato sauce packed with vegetables to blend with your favourite pasta when you are further along on your little ones journey!
